The Small Print Is the Useful Part

A package presents a price more clearly than it presents the quantity behind that price. When sizes or pack counts change, the familiar sticker can conceal a different cost per unit. Pantry Ink brings the receipt's small print into the foreground so the next shopping decision has a more comparable basis.

The calculation is simple only after the inputs are made explicit. Paid total, quantity, unit and product identity need to refer to the same thing. Otherwise a clean table can produce a persuasive comparison between unlike products. Keeping currencies and incompatible measures separate is a limitation worth preserving, even when it leaves some rows without a comparison.

The receipt history has another use: it can suggest that something has come home again within a chosen window. That observation is not a diagnosis of waste. The household may have used the item, shared it or bought it for a different purpose. A repeat flag should prompt a look in the cupboard, not deliver a moral judgment from a spreadsheet.

The shopping list is the forward-looking half of the notebook. It turns an observation into a choice the household can edit, check and export. Separating that export from receipt prices and dates keeps sharing narrower than handing over the entire record. The aim is a more considered basket, built from visible inputs rather than a promised saving.

The working notebook accepts structured CSV receipts and pasted CSV text, not photographs. Matching rows can be compared by normalized units, with source lines available for inspection. The shopping list supports editing and export of item names, quantities and checked states. Data stays in browser storage; no hosted household account or automatic cloud backup is implied by the local interface.
